The condenser coils are the part of a fridge that dumps heat back out into your kitchen, and on some models they sit in the open where dust, pet hair and cooking grease settle on them. When they load up, the compressor runs longer and hotter to do the same amount of work. The job takes about forty minutes of which most is waiting, needs nothing more than a vacuum cleaner and a coil brush, and the only real skill involved is not bending anything.
The first thing this page does is send you to your own documentation to find out whether your fridge has coils you are supposed to touch at all. Plenty do not. GE Appliances says most of its models built since 2001 have an enclosed condenser that never needs cleaning, and Whirlpool says some models can only be cleaned by a certified technician. The cleaning interval is the same story: the manufacturers checked for this page do not agree with each other, so both answers are printed below with their names against them instead of being averaged into one tidy number. Everything after that is sequence, and the sequence matters — the appliance comes off the power first, because the fan in that compartment starts on its own with no warning at all.

Stop if the documentation says that only a certified technician can clean the condenser. Some models have a condenser that the owner must not touch.
Stop if you find oil or a wet area on the condenser coils or below them. Do not do work on the sealed refrigerant circuit, because that work needs certification. Speak to a certified appliance technician.

Whirlpool says that in a normal home routine condenser cleaning is not typically needed, and gives every 3 to 6 months only for homes with pets, heavy kitchen traffic or construction dust. Samsung folds a check of the condenser coils into an annual deep clean. GE Appliances gives no interval at all, because it says most of its models since 2001 have an enclosed condenser that never needs it. ENERGY STAR also declines to give a number and tells you to read your own manual, which is the honest answer and the one we repeat here.
Quite possibly not, and this is the part most pages skip. GE Appliances says most refrigerator models it has made since 2001 have what it calls a NeverClean condenser, encased so that the coils will not require cleaning under normal conditions. Whirlpool says some of its models do not require it either, and that on others the condenser can only be cleaned by a certified technician. Your documentation is the only thing that can tell you which of those you own. If it says the condenser is enclosed or is a technician job, you are finished before you start.
GE Appliances lists three places: under the fridge behind the base grille, on the back, or on the top. Which one you have depends on the model and roughly on its age, and it changes the job completely — a front grille means you kneel down and never move the appliance, while rear coils mean pulling the fridge out and watching the water line behind it. Look it up before you start shifting furniture.
Yes, and it is the one instruction on this page that both manufacturers state flatly. GE says to always unplug the refrigerator from the power supply before attempting any maintenance or cleaning. Whirlpool says to unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker before cleaning. The reason is the fan sitting in that compartment: it is thermostatically controlled, so it starts on its own with no warning and nothing you do at the front of the appliance stops it.
Not for the length of this job, provided you keep the doors shut. A closed domestic fridge holds its temperature for a good while with no power, and this procedure takes well under an hour. Do not use the opportunity to reorganise the shelves with the door hanging open.
Bent fins block the air that has to pass between them, which is the opposite of what you came to do. Whirlpool's own guidance is to avoid bending fins or tubing. Use light pressure, brush along the fins rather than across them, and if you find fins already flattened, ask a technician rather than trying to comb them straight.
You can move a lot of dust that way, but you will move it into the room and into the rest of the machine compartment rather than out of it. A vacuum cleaner takes the dust away, which is the point. If you do blow the coils out, do it somewhere the dust can settle harmlessly and expect to vacuum afterwards anyway.
