This page states the terms on which the information here is provided. The short version: this is general reference information, you are responsible for your own safety and for the outcome, and where your equipment documentation differs from this site, follow your equipment documentation.
General reference, not professional advice
Every procedure on this site is general reference information. It is not professional advice and it is not a substitute for a qualified, licensed or certified professional. No relationship of any kind is created by reading it.
Equipment varies by manufacturer, by model and by year. A procedure written against first-party general guidance may not match your specific equipment. The documentation supplied with your equipment always takes precedence over anything on this site.
Your responsibility
Before you begin any task described here, satisfy yourself that you have the tools, the working conditions, the physical ability and the understanding to do it safely. If anything is unclear, if the equipment is damaged, or if the task exceeds your experience, stop and use a qualified professional.
You are responsible for your own safety, for the safety of anyone near you, and for the outcome of any work you do.
Specifications and unverified values
Where a value could be traced to a manufacturer document, a published standard or a government authority, the page prints it and names the source with the date it was read.
Where a value could not be traced, the page says so in place of the number and marks it unverified. Do not rely on an unverified value. Obtain it from the documentation supplied with your equipment or from the manufacturer.
Sources are re-checked on a schedule, but a manufacturer can revise a specification at any time. A value that was correct when it was recorded may not be correct today.
Work this site does not cover
Some work is excluded permanently: live electrical service-panel and meter work, gas line modification and appliance conversion, structural alteration, brake hydraulic service, airbag and restraint systems, pressurised fuel system work, refrigerant handling requiring certification, roof work requiring fall protection, hazardous material remediation, and anything that requires a licence in most jurisdictions.
If you find a page that appears to cross one of those lines, please report it to the corrections address. That is a defect and it will be taken down.
Limitation of liability
The information on this site is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, this site and its operators accept no liability for any loss, damage, injury, cost or expense — direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or otherwise — arising from the use of, or reliance on, any information published here.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitations of liability. Where that is the case, the exclusions above apply to the maximum extent that jurisdiction permits.
External links
Pages link to manufacturer documentation, published standards and government authorities as sources. Those sites are not under this site's control. A link is a citation, not an endorsement, and this site is not responsible for the content of an external page.
In an emergency
If there is a fire, a gas leak, a suspected carbon monoxide leak, a serious electrical fault or an injury, stop reading and call your local emergency number. Nothing on this site is urgent enough to come first.
